From Bare to Beautiful: A Dining Room Framed in Soft Elegance
Written by Tamara Kulyk, Award-Winning Window Treatment & Motorization Specialist
At Sensational SEAMS, we don’t just design drapery — we transform entire rooms to feel warmer, more elegant, and more personal.
This month’s featured project brings us to a bright and beautiful dining room, where a simple request for a custom banquette cushion blossomed into a full, softly layered transformation.
The 6-inch header above the pinch pleats precisely with the top trim of the window frame creating a clean, cohesive line that subtly elevates the entire window.
Meet Michelle
Michelle first reached out with one simple request: a custom cushion for her large banquette in the dining room area. But as often happens with thoughtfully designed homes, one beautiful idea opened the door to another.
When I visited the home—still awaiting move-in—the architecture was stunning, yet the rooms felt a little bare and echoed slightly. Michelle wanted something decorative to soften her dining room area but wasn’t sure where to begin. The only thing she knew for certain? She loved the bright natural light and the gorgeous view through that expansive dining-room window.
That was the perfect starting point for creating a space that feels warm, welcoming, and wonderfully finished.
“We had just completed our new home build and wanted to put some finishing touches in our dining space in the kitchen. I had looked around at a few companies and found Sensational SEAMS. I gave them a call and I met with Tamara. She was lovely and so helpful. She took her time and showed me some wonderful fabric options.”

A Dining Room Design that Started with a Cushion… and Sparked a Vision
One of my greatest joys in this work is the creative exploration—getting to work with fabrics, textures, and tones. So when the request for a custom banquette cushion came in, I was immediately excited.
We started by looking at fabrics that would complement the home’s beautiful finishes. Together, we landed on a performance upholstery-weight fabric in soft beige woven with warm greys—a colour blend that mirrors the existing neutral tones and whisper-nature textures throughout the home. The subtle texture and flecks of pattern mimic organic surfaces you’d find in nature, making it both practical and visually soothing.
The slight visual texture also makes everyday spills more discreet, which is always a bonus in a dining room area. That’s the benefit of a performance of upholstery-weight fabric, making spills easy to clean and wipe away.

Framing the Dining Room View With Soft, Elegant Luxury
Michelle’s banquette sits in front of a striking grand window that floods the space with natural light. Since she didn’t plan to close anything over the window, I suggested stationary drapery panels—their only job being to sit gracefully, soften the look of the room, and frame the view.
We chose a beautiful embroidered sheer fabric with a blend of soft patterning—something that feels traditional-meets-modern, rooted in natural motifs. The embroidery adds movement and texture without heavy structure, allowing light to shine through while giving the space a finished feel.
By combining soft beiges, warm greys, and nature-inspired detailing we achieved a completely cohesive colour story throughout the dining area.

A Sensational Detail: Perfect Proportions
One of my favourite design touches in this project was aligning the 6-inch header above the pinch pleats precisely with the top trim of the window frame. This thoughtful proportioning creates a clean, cohesive line that subtly elevates the entire window without drawing attention to itself. It’s the kind of design decision that most guests don’t consciously notice—but they feel it.
Finishing Layers That Bring It All Together
The finished space feels welcoming, airy, and elegantly grounded. What may have felt stark now feels intentional, layered, and beautifully tailored. The stationary panels don’t overpower the window—they simply frame it, transforming what could have been a bare window into a warm and refined focal point.
“I was looking for drapery and seat cushion for the banquet. I couldn’t have been happier with the results. It looks fantastic and we’ve had so many compliments already.
Thanks so much Tamara and your team with helping me make the space beautiful.”

What started as a simple request grew into a completely cohesive design story. Through soft neutrals, warm greys, natural textures and quiet patterns, the room now radiates comfort and refined simplicity.
