How our family grew – Mother’s Day – Life’s Work – Family Business
Our daughters Kasia and Tamara were soon learning the “stitches” to Sensational SEAMS. Our dreams and vision became reality – to be able to establish a business that I loved while staying home with the family we desired to have.
I always encouraged our girls that they needed to pursue their own passions, but along the way while growing up, they were going to be involved in our business, learning how to sew, interact with clients, develop graphic skills and installation techniques, and use all the tools and knowledge from Jamie and I to be strong, caring and independent women.
Our kids grew up in our workroom. Kasia loved to sort out thread colours and make long line-ups of pins on our cutting table. Over the years, she quickly developed the creativity and skills to sew and learn the real meaning of “Sensational SEAMS”, where the sewing needed to be perfect and that the details mattered every stitch of the way.
Over time, she learned to manage our website and put out very creative “Room of the Month” features, helping with photography and graphic design. Her passion was the piano, writing her own music and lyrics of God’s love and meaningful relationships in her life. The lyrics from her songs shows her heart of love and spirit of wanting to give God all the glory and do what is right. We are proud of her very own CD “All of Me, for You” released at her concert she put on in May of 2010. You can obtain your complimentary copy of this CD at our June 11, 2026 40th Anniversary Event, while supplies last. (More details to follow to register for this event.)
Since then, Kasia has lead many of the musicals and has been teaching at Knox Christian School in Bowmanville. We are so proud of her following her true, creative passions.
Tamara loved to play with tools and figure out how things worked. She spent time in the shop with Jamie, learning mechanics and carpentry. She learned the art of sewing, being specific with pattern placement and details. She loved animals and was always after us to get a dog, and then saved up enough money to buy her own horse.
Tamara was not afraid to pick up a chainsaw to cut down the trees in our woods so she could build a paddock for her horses. Hopping on the tractor to dig fence post holes, and building chicken coops was never too big of a challenge. In the workroom, we loved going through all the different fabric and trim books, pulling out colour combinations and design concepts for the best possible outcome. She learned the art of working with clients and building upon their ideas, helping them achieve a look that brought joy and pride to their homes. Tamara’s creativity along with her woodworking skills has made her a great designer of custom window treatments, building some of the most innovative and unique designs for our clients.
It is always interesting to see what she comes up with next, and are thankful to have her working alongside us in the family business. It’s the fun, enthusiastic and expressive side of Tamara that keeps our business growing and we are so proud of her accomplishments.
I never could have made the business work without the support of these three key people: Jamie – He is the supporter, encourager and installer for all the ideas and projects we come up with. With the electrical and millwright trade tickets, and the programming of robots over the years at General Motors in Oshawa, the automated shades with PowerView from HunterDouglas has become his expertise.
My Mom – She instilled in me strong family values. She always made herself available whenever I needed her. Mom babysat the girls when I needed to meet with a client when Jamie was on night shift. She helped with laundry and cooking, and was always interested in what we were creating in the sewing workroom.
My sister Helen – She worked alongside us for many years, sewing, strategizing the inner workings of our creations. She also watched over the girls when I needed to be out consulting with a new client for their window treatment project. She was like a second Mom and had so much fun with Kasia and Tamara.
I am so blessed to have the most satisfying career while raising our family. Our humble beginnings were built on strong morals and values that have become my life’s work and family business. We were committed to our family and were able to show up at school functions and family outings, piano recitals and school plays, and teach our girls what hard work and commitment looks like. We were able to be there for our Mom’s whenever they needed us and cherish the special visits and days we spent together. We love spending time with our grandkids, and treasure every moment.
We have incredible clients, and every client matters to us. We are blessed to create solutions and beautiful spaces that we are proud to put our name on. Many of our clients have become loyal friends whom we cherish and hold dear to our hearts. God has been good. We are blessed. We have been able to be a blessing to the World Vision Ministry for many years by purchasing sewing machines for women to make a career and provide for their families by learning the trade of sewing. We look forward to what the future holds for our families, our clients, and Sensational SEAMS. Thanks for being part of our journey.
Next time, we will take a peak and pull back the curtain on the fun events we have put together in the past, and share the details for our 40th Anniversary Event on June 11, 2026. Mark your calendars now, you won’t want to miss it.
